An orchard is depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s.

The orchard banks are visible as a series of earthwork banks.

Possible tree-planting banks of a former post-medieval to 19th century orchard are visible as a series of linear earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1947, at Lower Mackham Farm, Hemyock. An orchard is depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s, although by 1947, aerial photographs show that the orchard trees have been largely cleared, leaving a series of parallel northeast to southwest aligned earthwork banks, on which the fruit trees were established, visible. These earthworks occupy an area of approximately 0.46 hectares of gentle west facing slope within a single plot depicted on the First Edition OS map. Possible faint traces of the earthwork banks remain visible on aerial photographs of 1989, with almost all the fruit trees now cleared. Digital images from 1999 onwards, however, show that this former orchard has now been replanted with possible fruit trees.
