An extraction pit of likely post-medieval to 19th century date is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, to the south of Osmond’s Farm, Culmstock. The extraction pit is semi-circular in shape, measures approximately 30m in length by 24m in width and abuts, and so post-dates, two historic field boundaries along its southern and western edges. The earthwork is partly symbolised on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s and is located within an orchard (MDV115619) also depicted on this map, which was likely established after the dis-use of the extraction pit. The earthwork remains visible on digital images derived from Lidar data captured between 1998-2014.
