Possible tree-planting banks of a former post-medieval to 19th century orchard are visible as a series of linear earthwork banks on digital images derived from Lidar data captured in 2016, at Osmond’s Farm, Culmstock. An orchard is depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s, as is the site of a former extraction pit (MDV115618) which the orchard likely post-dates. Aerial photographs of 1947 show the orchard to be largely covered with trees, although by 1989, these have all been completely cleared. The earthwork banks, on which the fruit trees were established, are not however clearly visible and can only be seen on Lidar derived images. The parallel earthworks are east to west aligned and occupy an area of approximately 0.11 hectares of gentle northwest facing slope, within a single rectilinear shaped plot depicted on the First Edition OS map.
