Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The earthworks do not correspond with any linear features on this map.

Environment Agency, 1998-2017, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) EA: South Devon Coast to Dartmoor, LIDAR SX8066 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 31-MAY-2017 (Cartographic). SDV361470.

Linear earthwork ditches are visible.

Dean, R., 2014, Land at Ashwick Court, Broadhempston, Devon (Report - Survey). SDV359704.

This report was commissioned by AC Archaeology Ltd on behalf of Cavanna Homes. It was prepared by Substrata as supporting information for a forthcoming planning application relating to a proposed residential development.

Nine magnetic anomaly groups were identified as pertaining to archaeological deposits or structures. Of these, one coincides with former field boundaries mapped on historical maps between 1841 and 1964. Seven groups are likely to reflect former field boundaries and a ditched track not recorded on maps from 1841 onwards. The remaining group may reflect former ridge-and-furrow cultivation across the survey area.

Dean, R., 2014, Land at Ashwick Court, Broadhempston, Devon (Report - Survey). SDV359704.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (Interpretation). SDV361305.

Linear earthwork ditches, circa 8m in width, are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, off New Lane, Broadhempston. The earthworks are northwest to southeast and northeast to southwest aligned and are in keeping with the historic field patterns depicted in this location on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map which is characterised as Barton fields laid out between the 15th -18th centuries. The ditches do not correspond with the linear features on this map, or on subsequent available historic maps, although the western ditch does correspond with a magnetic anomaly identified by R. Dean during a recent geophysical survey. They are therefore interpreted as two relict medieval or post-medieval field boundaries which had passed out of use by the mid-19th century.
