Full description
Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.
The extraction pit appears to be dissected by, and so likely pre-dates, a northwest to southeast aligned field boundary. Gravel pits are also depicted within the vicinity here.

An extraction pit of between medieval to 19th century date is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, to the west of Jerwood’s Farm, Culmstock. The extraction pit is irregular in shape and measures approximately 43m in length by 30m in width. It appears to be dissected by, and so likely pre-dates, a field boundary depicted here on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map and possibly also on the Parish Tithe map. Gravel pits are also depicted in close proximity here, which may give some indication as to the nature of the extraction pit. It remains visible as an earthwork pit on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2014.
