An extraction pit of between medieval to 19th century date is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, to the northeast of Barton Farm Lands, Culmstock. The earthwork is sub-oval in shape and measures approximately 63m in length by 48m in width. It is bisected by, and so possibly pre-dates, an historic field boundary depicted here on the Parish Tithe map of approximately 1838-48, and so may have potential medieval origins. The western extent of this extraction pit is also symbolised on this map. It remains visible as an earthwork pit on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2014.
