An extraction pit of between medieval to 19th century date is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1989 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 to 2014, to the west of Bethany House. The earthwork is oval in shape, measures approximately 30m in length by 23m in width and is situated at the intersection of two roads, interestingly labelled ‘Black Pit’ on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s. Black Pit may give tentative reference to a possible medieval iron working site within the immediate vicinity, with such sites and large quantities of slag being recorded approximately 250m to the southwest at Tedburrow Farm. A field to the west is also recorded as 'Black acre' (MDV47472). Several gravel pits are also depicted within the vicinity on the First Edition OS map, so is also conceivable this extraction pit was similarly exploited for such.
