Name:Sand pits north of Wilmington, Widworthy parish

Summary

An area of former extractive pits, probably mostly sand pits, was visible on the east-facing slopes north of Wilmington as shallow earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data. The pits were probably in use from the late 19th century into the early to mid-20th century. The pits are now largely obscured by tree cover.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

An area of former extractive pits was visible on the east-facing slopes north of Wilmington as shallow earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data. The pits were not depicted on the Tithe Map for Wilmington but a small Sand Pit was depicted and annotated on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. The depicted pit was larger on the Ordnance Survey Second Edition 25 inch map of circa 1904-6. The earthworks were significantly larger but also partly tree covered on aerial photographs of 1947. This supports the interpretation that the pits, probably mostly sand pits, were probably in use from the late 19th century into the early to mid-20th century but had probably passed out of use by 1947. The pits are now largely obscured by tree cover.
