An extraction pit of between medieval to 19th century date is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1950 onwards, at Culmbridge Farm. The earthwork is irregular in shape and measures approximately 116m in length by 30m in width. The site of the extraction pit is depicted as an orchard on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s, with the orchard likely being established within the pit following its dis-use. It’s proximity to the iron production and waste sites recorded in Hemyock may suggest a medieval date. It remains visible as an earthwork pit on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2014.
