An extraction pit of between medieval to 19th century date is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1950 onwards, at Downmead, Hemyock. The earthwork is situated either side of an east to west aligned historic and extant field boundary which appear to dissect, and so likely post-date, the earthworks. It appears to abut however, and so post-date, the field boundary along its eastern edge. Its proximity to the iron production and waste sites in Hemyock may suggest a medieval date. The earthwork pit remains visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2014.
