An extraction pit of between medieval to 19th century date is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1950 onwards, to the northeast of Holcombe. The large irregular shaped earthwork measures approximately 178m in length by 32m in width and appears to have been cut into a natural combe. The site of the earthwork is depicted as an orchard on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s, with the orchard likely being established here within the pit following it’s abandonment. The extraction pit remains visible as an earthwork pit on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2014.
