A D-shaped bank and ditch defined enclosure approximately 55 metres by 45 metres in size was visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s as low earthworks and cropmarks on the west-facing slopes south of Pitfield Farm, Stockland parish. The almost levelled remains of earthwork banks or ridges were visible within the enclosed area, spaced approximately 8 metres apart and aligned cross contour. The ridges closely resemble earthwork banks interpreted elsewhere in the survey area as banks made for fruit tree planting to aid drainage within an orchard. The low earthwork banks are therefore interpreted as the site of a possible former orchard probably of post-medieval to 19th century date, although the enclosure earthworks might be significantly earlier in origin. The visible earthworks did not correspond with any orchard depicted on either the Tithe Map for Stockland or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, and must have been removed prior to circa 1840. The possible enclosure is now obscured by trees but survives as very slight earthworks to be visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.
