Full description

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of many of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields. The possible former boundaries recorded here are not curvilinear in form and may be post-medieval in date.

Bluesky International, 2016, LiDAR DTM data (0.5m resolution) Blackdown Hills and East Devon AONBs: 3 transects, LIDAR ST2200 Bluesky International DTM 24-APR-2016 (Cartographic). SDV359714.

Two straight, shallow ditches were visible as slight earthworks.

Two possible former field boundaries were visible on digital images derived from lidar data as slight earthwork ditches on the west-facing slopes below Ford Plantation, Dalwood parish. The narrow ditches were roughly one and three metres wide respectively, and might have been flanked on their south-eastern sides by slight banks, although this might be an artefact of the lidar visualisation. The earthworks fall within a wider field pattern that has been characterised as being probably of medieval origin, but the regular nature of the earthworks might indicate that they were more likely to be of post-medieval date.
