An extraction pit of between medieval to 19th century date is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1971 and 1989, at Pithayne Farm. The earthwork is broadly rectilinear in shape and measures approximately 84m in length by 50m in width. It is located adjacent to and likely associated with Pithayne Farm which has medieval origins, so may well be of similar age. The site of an orchard (MDV115754) is also depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s, which was likely established within the pit following its disuse. This association of extraction pit later utilised as an orchard has been a common theme throughout this survey.
