HER Number:MDV115775
Name:Possible Water Meadow, south of Parklands Farm, Clayhiddon

Summary

A possible water meadow system of probable 19th century date is visible as a series of earthwork ditches on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, to the south of Parklands Farm. A number of earthwork ditches remain visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2014.

A possible water meadow system of probable 19th century date is visible as a series of earthwork ditches on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, to the south of Parklands Farm. The possible water meadow comprises a series of linear and curvilinear ditches, less than 2m in width which occupy an area of approximately 7.43 hectares, on the floodplain of the River Culm. The system may form part of a valley bottom water meadow, although it is largely unclear how the system may have operated. It is possible it was fed by a drain and sluice located at approximately ST13491401, which may have diverted the flow of water from the River Culm and fed the system by way of the linear north to south aligned ditches which bisect the system. It is possible this water meadow represents a local hybrid style of water management, with the less typical arrangement of these gutters presumably designed to take advantage of the subtle variations in the micro-topography of the landscape here within the Culm Valley. Possible catch meadows have been recorded to the north (MDV115774) and northeast (MDV115769) of this watermeadow, although it is unclear if any of these systems are associated. A number of earthwork ditches remain visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2014.
