An extraction pit of between post-medieval to 19th century date is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, to the northwest of Culm Pyne Barton. The irregular shaped earthwork measures approximately 52m in length by 38m in width and abuts, and so likely post-dates, field boundaries along its southern and western edges. An ‘Old gravel pit’ is depicted in close proximity here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map, so this earthwork may have also been utilised for such. The extraction pit remains visible on infra-red digital images of 2014.
