A former quarry or extraction pit is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of the 1940s and digital images derived from lidar data on the west-facing slopes south of Snodwell Farm.
The earthwork visible on lidar derived imagery corresponds closely to a small woodland or copse. The woodland was depicted on the Tithe Map for Stockland and was therefore established prior to the early 19th century. The earthwork can just be discerned through sparser vegetation on aerial photographs of 1947, but the woodland remains well established on the most recent images available to the survey and is depicted on the OS MasterMap.
It is possible that the quarry was created in the earlier medieval period, as there is some evidence it disrupted a contemporary field pattern. Once the extractive use had ceased the pit, as less productive agricultural land, was probably converted to a plantation, possibly in the later medieval period.
