The remains of ridges, probably made for tree planting or improved drainage from the post-medieval period to the early 20th century were visible as slight earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data, south-east of Higher Rodway Farm, Stockland.
The visible banks extended over an area of roughly 0.2 hectares and were spaced approximately 5 metres apart. This small area of visible earthworks fell within a much larger area depicted as an orchard plot on Tithe Map for Stockland and the OS First Edition 25 inch map, and are therefore interpreted as ridges made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage. They were aligned cross contour, presumably to aid drainage towards combe and stream to the south-west.
The orchard remained lightly planted with trees in 1947 but was cleared of all planting in the second half of the 20th century. The plots to the south-east of the farm were reorganised and much of the former orchard was turned over to other agricultural use, and the ridges probably levelled, only surviving as slight earthworks in the plot closest to the farmstead.
