The remains of ridges, probably made for tree planting or improved drainage from the post-medieval period to the early 20th century were visible as slight earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data, on the steep west-facing slope of Horner Hill, overlooking Penny Hill Farm.
The visible banks extended over an area of nearly 400 square metres and were spaced approximately 5 metres apart. This small area of visible earthworks fell within a slightly larger area depicted as an orchard plot on Tithe Map for Stockland and the OS First Edition 25 inch map, and are therefore interpreted as ridges made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage. They were aligned cross contour, presumably to aid drainage downslope.
The orchard had been cleared of all planting by 1947, and the ridges probably only survive as slight earthworks in the southern half of the plot, the remainder occupied by a probable former quarry pit.
