Name:Former marl pit west of Snodwell Farm, Stockland

Summary

A probable former marl pit of possible medieval to 19th century date was visible as an earthwork pit on digital images derived from lidar data on the west-facing slopes below Snodwell Farm. The earthworks are concealed from view by a small woodland or copse of at least early 19th century date.

A probable former marl pit was visible as an earthwork pit on digital images derived from lidar data on the west-facing slopes below Snodwell Farm.
The earthwork visible on lidar derived imagery corresponds closely with a woodland or copse depicted on maps from the Tithe Map for Stockland onwards and was therefore established prior to the mid-19th century. The Tithe Apportionment for Stockland lists the woodland plot (2052) as Marl Pit Coppice. The woodland remains well established on the most recent images available to the survey and is depicted on the OS MasterMap.
It is possible that the marl pit was created in the medieval period. Once the extractive use had ceased the pit, as less productive agricultural land, was probably then converted to a coppice, possibly in the later medieval or post-medieval period, but potentially as late as the early 19th century.
