Extraction pits of between post-medieval to 19th century date are visible as earthwork pits on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, along the northern edge of Owleycombe Common. The two broadly semi-circular shaped earthworks measure approximately 44m in length by 27m in width (eastern earthwork) and approximately 62m in length by 27m in width (western earthwork). They appear to be bisected by a later field boundary first depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s, suggesting the earthworks may have once formed part of a single extraction pit. They remain visible as earthwork pits on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.
