HER Number:MDV115818
Name:Relict Field Boundaries east of Long Lea Farm, All Saints Parish

Summary

Relict field boundaries of probable medieval or post-medieval date are visible as curvilinear earthwork banks and ditches on aerial photographs taken from 1947 onwards and images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. They probably fell out of use prior to the mid-19th century.

Several curvilinear earthwork banks and ditches, between 2 and 6 metres in width, are visible on aerial photographs taken from 1947 onwards and images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. Parts correspond to boundaries depicted on the historic mapping and they fit into the extant field pattern which has been characterised as medieval enclosures. They are therefore likely to be the relict remains of field boundary banks that had fallen out of use by the mid-19th century. Several phases of enclosure seem to be represented: the widest ditched features centred at ST2969001522 and partly corresponding with a field boundary depicted on the historic mapping may have a different period of origin to the more clearly defined 2.5 metre wide banks in the field to the south. The latter seem to have been cut by a narrow curvilinear ditch, which terminates at its east end at a sharp bend in the field boundary depicted on the historic mapping. This does not appear to function as a water channel and it is assumed to be a later enclosure that was presumably established after the banked boundary went out of use.
