Extraction pits of possible post-medieval to 19th century date are visible as earthwork pits on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, at Clavwell’s Copse. The southern of the two earthworks is irregular in shape and measures approximately 153m in length by 52m in width. The extent of this earthwork is defined as Clavwell’s Copse on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map, the copse likely being established here within the former extraction pit followings its dis-use. That to the north is much smaller, oval in shape and measures approximately 38m in length by 33m in width. The earthwork pits are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.
