HER Number:MDV115885
Name:Possible Extractive Workings, south of Haydon Farm, Uffculme

Summary

Possible extractive workings of between medieval to post-medieval date are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1947 and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the south of Haydon Farm. The earthworks are defined by steep and sharp edges and have been cut into the side of steep southwest facing slope which forms part of Hackpen Hill.

Possible extractive workings of between medieval to post-medieval date are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1947 and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the south of Haydon Farm. The earthworks are broadly northwest to southeast aligned, measure approximately 417m in length and have been cut into the side of steep southwest facing slope which forms part of Hackpen Hill. The edge of these earthworks closely corresponds to a dashed line depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map. The earthworks are defined by steep and sharp edges and do not appear to represent part of the natural landform. They bear close similarity to other earthworks recorded during this survey along the northern (MDV115815) and eastern (MDV115831) slopes of Hackpen Hill and likely represent contemporary workings. The full extent of these workings was, however, slightly unclear given that they have been cut into a steep sloping hillside. As such only the face of these cuttings could be transcribed, although the extent of area to the immediate southwest, which may represent an area of previous workings, was somewhat arbitrarily defined within the monument polygon. Further investigation, such as a site visit may help to shed additional light on the nature of these earthworks.
