Extraction pits of between post-medieval to 19th century date are visible as earthwork pits on aerial photographs of 1989 and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the north of Westlands Farm. The southern of the two adjacent earthworks is irregular in shape, measures approximately 27m in length by 21m in width and is depicted here as a pond on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s. It is, however, largely obscured by tree cover. That to the north is also irregular in shape and measures approximately 38m in length by 34m in width. The earthworks are situated in close proximity to a number of similar such features recorded here during this survey.
