HER Number:MDV115924
Name:Earthworks of Possible Extraction Pits, southeast of Burrow Hill Farm

Summary

Possible extraction pits, or similar such workings of uncertain date are visible as slight earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, on steep southeast facing slope to the southeast of Burrow Hill Farm. Similar, albeit more convincing, earthworks interpreted as open cast mines were recorded to the northeast (MDV115858) and west (MDV115817) which add some weight to these features being archaeological in origin.

Possible extraction pits, or similar such workings of uncertain date are visible as slight earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, on steep southeast facing slope to the southeast of Burrow Hill Farm. Although the possible earthworks are poorly defined, a number of slight mounds and undulations are visible which do not seem to obviously form part of the natural landform here. Similar, albeit more convincing, earthworks interpreted as open cast mines were recorded to the northeast (MDV115858) and west (MDV115817) which add some weight to these features being archaeological in origin. Given their indistinct nature, individual features could not be defined. Instead the approximate limit of these features was defined by an extent of area. The earthworks are not visible on aerial photographs or other digital images made available to the survey. A site visit may more conclusively determine the nature of these earthworks.
