HER Number:MDV115926
Name:Extractive Workings, Collinshayne Copse, Hemyock

Summary

A series of earthworks cuttings of possible medieval to 19th century date are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, along the slopes of Collinshayne Copse. The cuttings bear close similarity to other earthworks recorded during this survey, for example along the northern (MDV115815) and eastern (MDV115831) slopes of Hackpen Hill, and likely represent contemporary workings. The earthworks are largely obscured by tree cover on aerial photographs and digital images.

A series of earthworks cuttings of possible medieval to 19th century date are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, along the slopes of Collinshayne Copse. The workings comprise a number of separate crescent shaped earthworks which have been cut into the base of steep west facing slope, at an approximate length of 477m. The earthworks are defined by steep and sharp edges which do not appear to form part of the natural landform here. A possible sub-circular earthwork mound located to the north (ST14881156) and approximately 8m in diameter may represent a spoil heap associated with these workings. The cuttings bear close similarity to other earthworks recorded during this survey, for example along the northern (MDV115815) and eastern (MDV115831) slopes of Hackpen Hill, and likely represent contemporary workings. The full extent of these workings was, however, slightly unclear given that they have been cut into a steep sloping hillside. As such only the face of these cuttings could be transcribed, although the extent of area to the immediate west, which may represent an area of previous workings, has been somewhat arbitrarily defined within the monument polygon. Further investigation, such as a site visit may help to shed additional light on the nature of these earthworks. The earthworks are largely obscured by tree cover on aerial photographs and digital images.
