Summary

Probable extractive pits are visible as earthworks on images derived from lidar data flown between 1998 and 2014 and one on aerial photographs taken from 1947 onwards. They are interpreted as of possible post-medieval origin and appear to have become disused by the mid-19th century.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), LIDAR ST2801 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 30-SEP-2014 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

Two earthwork pits are visible either side of the parish boundary.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

An irregular earthwork pit, circa 70 metres across, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken from 1947 onwards. It is also visible on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, as is a nearby smaller but better-defined pit 41 by 7 metres in the woodland just to the south of the parish boundary. The latter was not visible on the aerial photographs due to tree cover. Neither are depicted on the historic mapping, although an area of scrubby ground is depicted within the footprint of the larger pit. The earthworks are interpreted as extraction pits that had become disused by the mid-19th century. Nearby ‘Old Clay Pit’ (MDV47315) circa 70 metres to the south-west might indicate the type of material that was being extracted.
