An extraction pit of between post-medieval to 19th century date is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, to the north of Bodmiscombe. The semi-circular shaped earthwork measures approximately 54m in length by 18m in width and abuts, and so likely post-dates, a field boundary along its southwest edge. The extent of the earthwork is defined by a dashed line on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s, so also clearly pre-dates this map. The earthwork remains visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 and earthworks are depicted here on the 2016 Ordnance Survey MasterMap.
