Name: | Extraction Pits along the scarp west of Castle Cross, Membury Parish |
---|
Summary
Extensive extractive pits cut into the hillside are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken from 1947 onwards and on images derived from lidar data flown between 1998 and 2014. They are interpreted as of post-medieval or modern origin and appear to have become disused by the mid-19th century.

An extensive area of earthwork pits, covering 950 metres along the scarp, is visible on aerial photographs taken from 1947 onwards and on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. They are not depicted on the historic mapping, although an ‘Old Quarry’ and ‘Tolcis Lime Works’ are depicted to the south (MDV47358 and MDV49629). The pits are from 14 and up to 90 metres wide and cut into the hillside and most seem to sit within the field boundaries. This seems to suggest that they post-date the field system which comprises straight-edged land parcels characteristic of 19th century enclosures. It is possible that the earthworks are earlier phases of extraction predating the quarries to the south, but likely to have also been extracting materials for lime works.
