Possible tree-planting banks of a former post-medieval to 19th century orchard are visible as a series of linear earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, to the north of Upper Hayne Farm. An orchard is depicted here on the Parish Tithe Map of approximately 1838-48, although had apparently been cleared by the time of the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s. Aerial photographs of 1947 show that the fruit trees have been completely grubbed out, leaving a series of parallel northeast to southwest aligned earthwork banks, on which the fruit trees were established, visible. These banks occupy an area of approximately 0.72 hectares of gentle southwest facing slope. The orchard banks remain visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.
