A large earthwork cutting of a possible medieval to 19th century extraction pit is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, to the south of Ruggsmoor. The irregular shaped earthwork measures approximately 212m in length by 116m in width and has been cut into moderate to steep southwest facing slope. The scale of the earthworks here suggests the site was in operation for some time. The extent of this earthwork is also possibly defined as a dashed line on the Parish Tithe map of approximately 1838-48, suggesting it pre-dates this map. The area is now defined as a copse on the Ordnance Survey 2016 MasterMap. The extraction pit remains visible as an earthwork pit on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.
