A roughly oval shaped pit circa 33 by 25 metres in size was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1947, to the south of Burridge Cross, Chardstock parish.
The visible earthwork does not correspond with any extractive feature depicted on the 19th century maps available to the survey. The pit is therefore interpreted as the remains of an extractive pit, probably a chalk pit of post-medieval to 19th century date that had passed out of use by the late-19th century.
The pit had been ploughed near level by 1971, the resulting cropmark revealing the full extent of the pit to be more elongated, closer to 50 metres in length. A more extensive darker cropmark on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010 may reflect the impact of the pit on local drainage.
The pit earthwork is probably the same feature as that previously and erroneously interpreted as a ditched barrow mound.
