Name:Possible Extractive Pits, northeast of Goodleigh, Uffculme

Summary

Earthworks of possible extraction pits of uncertain date are visible as a series of slight earthwork pits and mounds on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the northeast of Goodleigh. The subtle earthworks, which may equally be of natural origin, are not clearly visible on aerial photographs or other digital images made available to the survey.

Earthworks of possible extractive pits of uncertain date are visible as a series of slight earthwork pits and mounds on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the northeast of Goodleigh. The cluster of earthworks is northwest to southeast aligned and occupies an area of approximately 1.23 hectares of steep southwest facing slope. The nature of these earthworks should be viewed with caution and it is equally likely they are the result of natural processes, such as slumping, on the steep hillside slopes. They have nonetheless been recorded given their similarity with other, albeit more convincing, earthworks recorded during this survey from lidar images, such as the possible Iron Age to Roman open cast mines to the northwest MDV115817. Given their indistinct nature, it was not possible to transcribe individual features. Instead, the approximate limit of these earthworks was defined by an extent of area polygon. The subtle earthworks are not clearly visible on aerial photographs or other digital images made available to the survey.
