The purpose of the pit is unknown but several old marl pits are depicted in this area on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map and a similar function for this relict pit is probable. The earthworks do not match any quarry or extractive pits depicted in precise location on the historic map and it had therefore probably passed out of use prior to the 1880s.
