A possible former extractive pit of unknown, but probably post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in early 2016 as an earthwork cut into the north-west facing slope of the Otter valley for up to 12 metres, adjacent to Axminster Road, south-east of Perrie Hale, Honiton parish.
The purpose of the pit is unknown but several old sand pits were depicted in this area on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map and a similar function for this relict pit is likely. However, the earthworks do not match any quarry or extractive pits depicted in precisely this location on the historic map and it had therefore probably passed out of use prior to the 1880s.
