A low bank between 20 and 45 metres wide was visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 as an earthwork almost 640 metres long on the east-facing slopes north-east of White Cross, Offwell parish. The bank could be interpreted as a continuation of a post-medieval field boundary to the north-west. However, it appears to be overlain or cut by several boundaries of this period and such a dramatic reorganisation of the field pattern in the post-medieval period seems unlikely. The bank therefore probably predates the post-medieval period. The slight earthwork is tentatively interpreted as evidence for a road of Roman date, several possible locations for which have been suggested east of Honiton. The line of the possible route might have influenced the field system to the north-west. Further work, such as geophysical survey is recommended.
