Two former extractive pits or quarries of probable post-medieval to 19th century date were visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 as earthwork pits on the north-north-west facing slopes within Spilcombe Copse, Monkton parish. The irregularly shaped pits measured up to 50 metres across and appeared to be associated with a narrow road or track, possibly an access track.
The precise function of the pits is unknown. Nonetheless, Spilcombe Hill was listed as a plantation on the Tithe Apportionments of 1842 and it is probable that the pits had ceased to be used prior to the establishment of the woodland, and are therefore at the latest early 19th century in date.
