Several probable former extractive pits or quarries of post-medieval to 19th century date were visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 as earthwork pits on the south and south-east-facing facing slopes within Spilcombe Copse, Monkton parish.
The pits were irregularly shaped, varying in character from wide and shallow pits up to 50 metres across, as at circa ST193011, to small intercutting pits around 5 to 15 metres in diameter at circa ST193010.
The precise function of the pits is unknown. Nonetheless, Spilcombe Hill was listed as a plantation and brake on the Tithe Apportionments of 1842 and it is probable that the pits had ceased to be used prior to the establishment of the woodland, and are therefore at the latest early 19th century in date.
