A possible former extractive pit was visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in early 2016 as a roughly triangular earthwork approximately 18 metres across, cut into the west facing slope of the combe west of Combewater Farm, Monkton parish.
The purpose of the pit is unknown but a large gravel pit was depicted on Agland’s Hill to the south-west on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map and a similar function for this relict pit is likely.
However, the earthworks do not match any quarry or extractive pits depicted in precisely this location on the historic map and it had therefore probably passed out of use prior to the 1880s.
