HER Number:MDV116067
Name:Possible Earthworks, west of Musgrove Farm, Dunkeswell

Summary

Earthworks of potential archaeological origin are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the west of Musgrove Farm. Whilst the origin and function of these earthworks is unclear, they do bear some resemblance to the Iron Age to Roman open-cast mines recorded elsewhere during this project.

Earthworks of potential archaeological origin are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the west of Musgrove Farm. The earthworks are visible as a series of slight undulations and bank-like features which occupy an area of approximately 0.85 hectares of moderate southeast facing slope. Given their diffuse nature, individual features were not transcribed. Instead the limit of these earthworks was defined by an extent of area polygon. Whilst the origin and function of these earthworks is unclear, they do bear some resemblance to the Iron Age to Roman open-cast mines recorded elsewhere during this project, such as MDV115817 to the northwest. A number of extraction pits of possible post-medieval to 19th century date are also recorded within the immediate vicinity, so may be associated with these. The earthworks were not clearly visible on aerial photographs or other digital images made available to the survey.
