Earthwork banks, ditches, terraces and hollows were visible on the south-east facing slopes to the north-east of Shaugh Farm adjacent to Dumpdon Lane, on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.
The visible earthworks appear to define rectangular and sub-rectangular enclosures at ST17790322 and ST17820331, possible building platforms at circa ST17890332 and a possible hollow way from circa ST17770321 to ST17810329.
The earthworks are interpreted as the remains of a possible roadside settlement of probable medieval to post-medieval date. It is likely that the settlement was associated with an extensive field system and further possible settlement on the slopes of Dumpdon Hill to the north and west, and a former orchard indicated by characteristic earthwork banks immediately to the west, recorded separately.
The earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted on the Tithe Map for Luppit and had therefore been cleared prior to circa 1840.
