A former extractive pit of unknown, but probably post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in early 2016 as an earthwork pit cut into an east facing ridge to the east of Dumpdon Lane, Luppitt parish. The pit is irregularly rectangular in shape measuring approximately 55 by 15 metres in size. Although no quarry or extractive pit is depicted in this location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map or Tithe Map for Luppit, the approximate area is defined, on the earlier map as a copse, and on the later map as rough ground and a pond. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pit had passed out of use prior to the early 19th century but remained an extant earthwork that continued to determined landuse. A pond continues to be depicted in this location on the current OS MasterMap at the time of the survey.
