Three former extractive pits of unknown, but probably post-medieval to 19th century date were visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in early 2016 as earthwork pits cut into an east facing ridge west of Fordhill Cottages, Luppitt parish.
The two westernmost pits are roughly circular and measure approximately 13 to 14 metres in diameter. The easternmost pit, abutting the course of the road, is triangular in shape and significantly larger in size, approaching 60 metres across at the widest point. Two small possible spoil heaps were visible adjacent to this pit.
None of the pits are depicted on either the Ordnance Survey First Edition map or Tithe Map for Luppit, but all correspond with areas of woodland listed as copses on the Tithe Apportionments. Significantly, all are under the same ownership and the plot in which the larger pit is located (1435) appears to be named Ford Pit Copse.
The pits are interpreted as extractive pits that passed out of use prior to the early 19th century, the otherwise agriculturally marginal plots subsequently used for woodland, a common pattern noted in the survey area.
