A possible former extractive pit of unknown but probably post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in early 2016 as an earthwork pit cut into an east facing ridge to the north of Halsdon House, Luppitt parish.
The pit is roughly D-shaped and measures approximately 24 metres in diameter, abutting an extant field boundary possibly of medieval origin. No quarry or extractive pit is depicted in this precise location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map or Tithe Map for Luppit. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pit had passed out of use prior to the early 19th century. Two small old clay pits are depicted on the OS First Edition map circa 160 metres to the east, and a similar role for this pit is likely.
