Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with any depicted quarry or extractive pit.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with any depicted map features.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

The earthworks fall within an area that was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields

Bluesky International, 2016, LiDAR DTM data (0.5m resolution) Blackdown Hills and East Devon AONBs: 3 transects, LIDAR ST1804 Bluesky International DTM 04-MAY-2016 (Cartographic). SDV359714.

Roughly oval and circular pits were visible as earthworks.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

Three possible former extractive pits of unknown but probably post-medieval to 19th century date were visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in early 2016 as an earthwork pits cut into the south-west facing slopes of a narrow combe south of Pound Copse, Luppitt Parish.
The pits are roughly oval to circular in shape, measuring between approximately 28 to 38 metres in diameter. Two of the pits abut extant field boundaries that have been characterised as possibly of medieval origin. The visible earthworks did not correspond with any quarries or extractive pits depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map or Tithe Map for Luppit. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pits had passed out of use prior to the early 19th century. An old clay pits is depicted and annotated on the OS First Edition map circa 95 metres to the south-east of the southernmost pit, and a similar role is suggested for the pits recorded here.
