Exeter Archaeology, 2003-2004, East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Archaeological Survey, Site No. 588 (Archive - Survey). SDV351568.

Field called Blackmead on Tithe Map/Tithe Apportionment (Tithe Apportionment No. 179) with Blackland Orchard to east (Tithe Apportionment No. 183; SY 1708 9553). Names with a 'black' element may refer to burnt deposits in the soil associated with burning of a former structure, industrial activity such as ironworking, or may refer to black/dark peaty soil. Other fields with a 'Black' element lie to north of road.
