The earthwork does not correspond with any depicted quarries or extractive pit.

A large pit was visible as an earthworks within Hedgend Plantation.

A former extractive pit of probably post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 as an earthwork on the upper north-west facing slopes of the Otter Valley, within Hedgend Plantation, south-east of Monkton Barton, Monkton Parish.
The pit is irregular in shape and measures up to circa 37 metres across, abutting the plantation boundary. No quarries or extractive pits are depicted in this location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map, supporting the interpretation that the pit had passed out of use prior to the early 19th century. The earthworks are obscured from view on aerial photographs by dense tree cover.
