A former extractive pit of probably post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 as an earthwork on the upper north-west facing slopes of the Otter Valley, within Hedgend Plantation, west of Viney Cross, Monkton Parish.
The pit is irregular in shape and measures up to circa 35 metres across, abutting the road on its west edge. No quarries or extractive pits are depicted in this precise location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map, supporting the interpretation that the pit had passed out of use prior to the early 19th century. However a sand pit is depicted circa 35 metres to the north supporting the suggestion of a similar function for this earthwork. Dense tree cover obscures the pit from view on aerial photography.
