Narrow and shallow pits cut into the upper north-west facing slopes of the Otter Valley within Hedgend Plantation, Monkton Parish, were visible as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.
The pits are irregular in shape and appear to be overlain by linear field or plantation boundaries of probable post-medieval date. The excavations appear relatively superficial and generally follow the contours of the slope.
They are interpreted as pits for the extraction of shallow surface deposits such as sand or gravel of probably post-medieval to 19th century date. No quarries or extractive pits are depicted in these precise locations on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map, supporting the interpretation that they had passed out of use prior to the early 19th century. However a sand pit is depicted at circa ST19660359 to the east, supporting the suggestion of a similar function for this earthwork. Small mounds recorded at ST19680383 are interpreted as possible spoil heaps. The dense tree cover of Hedgend Plantation obscures the earthworks from view on aerial photography.
